Legendary comic Steve Martin’s hilarious take on face mask fashion and selfies | PerthNow

Funnyman Steve Martin has come up with an ingenious solution so fans know they’re brushing socially distanced elbows with a celebrity of his calibre, even when wearing a face mask.

In a world where designer masks are becoming the norm, the 75-year-old actor and accomplished banjo player posted a photo on Twitter showing off his disposable mask and DIY headband design with his name written on it and an arrow pointing towards him.

“I always wear a mask when I go outside. But something about it was leaving me anxious and unsettled. I thought about the problem, addressed it, and here is the solution,” he wrote.

The pic became an instant hit online and several fans remarked that it reminded them of a segment from his old stand-up routine with an arrow though his head.

When the coronavirus lockdowns began in March, Martin was on tour in Ireland with Martin Short as part of their double act.

The pair toured in Australia late last year and followed on from their 2018 Netflix special An Evening You’ll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, which earned them four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety Special.

They pair have been friends for almost 34 years which began when they met while filming the 1986 movie The Three Amigos alongside Chevy Chase.

Despite being old hands at stand-up, they said improvisation was not something that formed a huge part of their shows and they rarely picked out audience members.

“We don’t like to offend the audience, we like to offend each other,” Short said.

“We’ve had jokes that we have thought about later and said, that’s awfully mean for a person that doesn’t deserve it, so we will change those,” Martin said.

“This we do for fun and we keep our hands in it and keep up practice. The more we do it, the more the fun grows.”
