DIY Face Mask with a Turtle Fur T-Shirt | Turtle Fur®

Whether you already have one , or are looking for the perfect shirt to use for your next DIY face mask, these 100% cotton, made in the USA t’s will be just the thing to have you feeling excited for your new homemade face covering. As you might be wearing your masks for a couple hours at a time, it’s crucial that you feel comfortable in whatever fabric you choose. These t-shirts feel lightweight and soft, and whichever way you choose to make your mask, you’ll be comfortable even after a few hours of wear.

There are two ways, as recommended by the CDC, to create your own face mask using a t-shirt or bandana.

Face Mask with Hair Ties

Here is what you need to make this at home:

step-by-step Instructions:

1. Cut approximately 10″ off the bottom of your t-shirt (you will be using both the front and the back, automatically giving you two layers of protection). You can use the rest of the t-shirt to make the second face mask option, so you have multiple to use in rotation.

2. Lengthwise, fold top and bottom of the tube to meet in the middle.

3. Grab your two hair ties. Put one hair tie around each end of the folded t-shirt, and slide it about 1/3 of the way down.

3. Take the outside thirds and fold them over the hair ties, to lie on top of the middle third.

4. With the t-shirt folded up, pick up by the hair ties, securing the mask over your nose and mouth and looping the hair ties around your ears.

5. Pat down to secure a contoured fit around your nose and mouth. This should look very similar to our Totally Tubular Face Mask.

Face Mask – tie behind the head

This is a great option for those of us who wear glasses, as it ties behind the head rather than loops behind the ears.

What you need:

– Turtle Fur T-Shirt

step-by-step Instructions:

1. Cut approximately 7 inches off the bottom of your t-shirt. You can use the rest of your shirt to make other face masks, or rags to use around the house!

2. From one side, cut out a large rectangle, leaving about 0.5-1″ for the ties.

3. Cut the end of each tie.

4. Put the mask securely over your nose and mouth, and tie one string behind your head and the other below your ears, behind your neck.
